Hobart and beyond

We recently spent three nights in Hobart to celebrate our wedding anniversary. On our way down we called in at New Norfolk and spent some time at the fascinating Willow Court, the former asylum, now a collection of antiques and collectables stores, motel, café and graveyard for old cars and tractors.

That night we enjoyed a delicious glass of wine at my favourite bar, Evolve at Macq01, surrounded by prehistoric fossils. We followed up with dinner in style at Landscape.

On Saturday morning we walked to Salamanca for breakfast only to discover the restaurants were closed (fortunately the markets begin again next weekend so the restaurants will no doubt be relieved). In fact, it was difficult finding anywhere to have breakfast - even DOME was closed - but we ended up at a nice little café on the first floor of the Cat & Fiddle Arcade. As we walked down CBD streets we were surprised to see how many shops are now empty due to COVID-19, even those that were formerly name brand boutiques.

Saturday night we chose Mures upstairs for dinner, and were welcomed like long lost cousins. The staff were so happy to see us that all patrons were provided with a very large, free glass of wine. The meal was superb and we chatted to a couple at the next table from Flinders Island who know several people we know!

On Sunday we picked up some picnic food supplies at Woolies and drove 2.5 hours out to Lake Pedder, a place we had wanted to visit for 27 years. We weren't disappointed. The road out is windy and picturesque, and the lake scenery is stunning. At Strathgordon we discovered the Lake Pedder Wilderness Lodge which was open for business, and its Twelvetrees Restaurant and bar looked so inviting we gave up the idea of a picnic and dined inhouse, which was fantastic.

After lunch we took a drive to the Gordon River Dam. Completed in 1974 it is the tallest dam in the state, and truly spectacular. On the way there I thought I spotted (excuse the pun) a live spotted-tail quoll on the side of the road. Having never seen one in the wild before, I was unsure, but, on the way back we saw it again and this time pulled over to take photos. It was, unfortunately, feasting on a wombat...

Note the cable car track which disappears over the edge...

We returned home on Monday, after visiting Richmond for breakfast at Czeg's Café and taking the backroads to the highway. Apart from a brief shower of rain on Sunday afternoon we had delightful weather, and a really enjoyable weekend!
